Your adventure begins in the upper part of Passeig de Gràcia, before setting off to explore the natural beauty of Montserrat, Catalonia's most iconic mountain. Crowned with a Benedictine Monastery, Montserrat offers an ideal half-day excursion for those seeking a delightful day out in nature, just a few kilometers away from Barcelona. En route to the Monastery, feast your eyes on the Massif of Montserrat, a striking multi-peaked rocky expanse with distinctive needle-shaped formations.
Upon reaching your destination, you'll have the opportunity to explore the Monastery. Established in the 10th century, it remains operational today with over 70 monks. It's also renowned for housing the figure of La Moreneta (visit not guaranteed), who is revered as the patron saint of Catalonia. Your guide will bring history alive by explaining the past and ventures of this Monastery dating nearly a thousand years.
Next, hop aboard the Sant Joan Railway to take in the area's intriguing flora and fauna. If you're up for it, the tour can proceed with a gentle hike abundant with greenery, allowing you to soak in the scenic vistas of Montserrat Natural Park. To replenish your energy after the hike, you'll get to savour the traditional Catalan pastry, "coca de Montserrat."
You'll then have some leisure time to browse the farmer's market and cafeteria, visit souvenir shops. At the end of the day, you'll meet with your guide again to go back to Barcelona.
