The imposing Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière (or Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière in French) stands high above Lyon, France, overlooking Vieux Lyon, Place Bellecour, and beyond.
This iconic symbol of Lyon is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, making it a popular pilgrimage site in addition to its status as one of the city’s main tourist attractions. Because of its position on top of Fourvière Hill, this minor basilica can be seen from many parts of Lyon.
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière’s design displays a blend of Romanesque and Byzantine architectural styles. The basilica has four main towers and is affectionately known by locals as "the upside-down elephant" because of its appearance.
