Retken kuvaus

Tutustu Mesoamerikan riuttajärjestelmän ihmeisiin tällä National Geography Day Tourilla, jolla sinulla on ainutlaatuinen tilaisuus snorklata ja nähdä merten asiantuntijoiden johdolla ihmiskunnan vaikutus riuttaan ja korallien vaalenemiseen. Tämän jälkeen kuulet riuttojen elvyttämiseen liittyvistä käytännön toimista.

Matkaat meriveden ollessa rauhallisimmillaan kahdelle eri riutalle, jotka molemmat kärsivät ilmaston lämpenemisen, veden saastumisen ja mikromuovien aiheuttamasta vaalenemisesta. Tutustut nuorimpia koralleja käsittävään El Meco -riuttaan, mikä tekee siitä erityisen nähtävyyden.

Retkellä käytettävät veneet ovat saaneet Blue Flag -sertifikaatin, mikä takaa sen, että matkasi on ekologisten käytäntöjen mukainen. Matkan varrella tutustut myös paikalliseen eläimistöön ja nautit burritolounaan.

Tällä retkellä inspiroidut suojelemaan näitä koskemattomia meriekosysteemejä, mikä on National Geographicin tukeman Pristine Seas -hankkeen tavoite. Hanke on tehnyt tutkimusretkiä Banco Chinchorroon, joka on merkittävä osa Mesoamerikan riuttajärjestelmää. Hankkeen tarkoitus on korostaa, miten tärkeää on suojella meriympäristöjä ihmisen vaikutukselta ja samalla suojella valtameriemme viimeisiä luonnonvaraisia alueita.

Osallistumalla tälle retkelle ymmärrät, miten tärkeää on säilyttää ja suojella arvokasta Mesoamerikan riuttajärjestelmää. Näe itse valtameren ihmeet ja opi ymmärtämään koralliriuttoja ja niiden kriittistä roolia biosfäärissä.

The guide was very knowledgeable and engaging and tried to take us to see as much as possible but it was extremely rough in the sea. I’m a fairly good swimmer but found it hard going. Sea wasn’t that clear so visibility wasn’t great

Interessante Schnorcheltour mit 2 anderen Teilnehmern- sehr gut. Meine Erwartungen zu den Informationen über den Erhalt und die Aufbauarbeit der Riffe wurde nicht erfüllt. Leider nur mit englischem-spanischem Guide. Die angesteuerten Schnorchelplätze waren sehr interessant und sehenswert.

The presentation was cut short as the projector stopped working. We were told that the reef is a symbiotic relationship between the coral building animals and zooxanthellae but not told why the reeds are under threat or how they get stressed. Once in the water it was very choppy and there was current and other groups so it was difficult to work out where we were supposed to be even with the leader shouting. The second stop was even rougher and current stronger. Not good for first time snorkelle

Cozumel guided snorkelling and island tour from Cancun

Hop aboard a super-speedy boat headed to Cozumel Island, where the turquoise waters of the Caribbean and its marine life are waiting. Soak up the breathtaking landscapes before snorkelling at two of the most famous reefs in the southern part of the island, Palancar and Colombia. They're separated by a couple of metres of open water, so you'll have wall-to-wall reef to explore. Next stop is the shores of El Cielo – which literally means ‘the sky' in English – as it's famous for its peaceful atmosphere and giant starfish population, which you'll find covering much of the ocean floor. You'll also have the chance to see stingrays and other sea creatures during your time here. Afterwards, there'll be some time to relax and check out the views from El Cielito Sandbar, before heading towards the centre of Cozumel.For lunch, you'll get to try some of the region's typical dishes at a vibrant, local restaurant with an ocean view, before rounding off the day with free time to wander around Cozumel Centre. Argelia, one of our guides, says ‘You'll learn about the calendars in the Temple of Kukulkan and its sacred staircase, where each equinox the shadows represent the descent of the feathered snake.' Afterwards, you'll enjoy a cenote swim and visit a Maya village for lunch.It's an early start so as to be the first to arrive at this UNESCO World Heritage Site – the perfect time to snap a few selfies.
