The fairytale gate of Koppelpoort, (in Amersfoort) rests on the city’s canals as a strong and elegant protector. Perfect for the wandering tourist and all history buffs!

Completed in 1427 as part of the city wall, Koppelpoort is one of the best medieval structures in the Dutch city of Amersfoort. This combined water and land gate has an impressive history and its beauty alone is enough to entice anyone.

To protect the city, the gate had to be opened and closed by a treadmill. Can you guess how the treadmill got moving? Well, it was a risky job that had to be moved by twelve prisoners called the ‘wheel turners’!

The men had to walk inside the large wooden wheel at exactly the same pace, or else they could have fallen off, bringing the rest of the team down too. There is even a special spot that was used to harass attackers with hot oil or malt if they came too close.

Koopenpoort is the perfect place to take in some picturesque views and a relaxing stroll. Wander along the canals and admire the stunning brick design, emblems and icons of the gate. Take photos of its reflection in the water and be transported back in time!
