Il Bode Museum, inaugurato per la prima volta nel 1904 con il nome di Kaiser Friedrich-Museum in onore dell'imperatore Federico III, prese il nome attuale nel 1956 in onore al suo primo curatore, conosciuto per le sue mostre ricche di creatività, sviluppate mescolando pezzi e periodi storici diversi, creando percorsi espositivi tematici personali.
L'edificio è di Ernst von Ihne e sembra emergere direttamente dal fiume Spree; purtroppo fu fortemente danneggiato durante la guerra. Ci sono voluti molti anni per restaurarlo e farlo tornare alla sua bellezza di un tempo. Un elaborato progetto rinnovamento è cominciato nel 1997 ed è stato portato avanti nel nuovo millennio.
Oggi la collezione di scultura del museo include pezzi di grande valore dall'Oriente cristiano, sculture medioevali, arte gotica italiana e del primo Rinascimento e molto altro.
Una collezione di numismatica è stata aperta al pubblico nel 2004, nel centesimo anniversario dell'inaugurazione del museo, e oggi è considerata una delle collezioni di monete più grandi e più famose al mondo.
