Il nome del vulcano Hekla significa "l'incappucciato" poiché la sua sommità è spesso avvolta da una nuvola. Invece della tipica forma conica, è costituita da una serie di creste innevate. Si trova a quasi 1500 m dalla cima della cresta più alta.
