Op deze foodtour ontdek je de vulkanische landschappen en culinaire tradities van Lanzarote. Je avontuur begint bij Las Salinas de Janubio, de grootste zoutvlakte van de Canarische Eilanden. Hier kom je meer te weten over hoe het zout op traditionele wijze wordt gewonnen met technieken die teruggaan tot de 19e eeuw. Het witte zout vormt een perfect contrast met de donkere vulkanische ondergrond van het eiland, dus zorg dat je je camera bij de hand hebt.

Dan ga je naar El Golfo, een vissersdorp aan de westkust van het eiland. Hier stop je bij Lago Verde, een groene lagune in een oude vulkaankrater die zijn kleur dankt aan de algen in het water. De lagune wordt van de zee gescheiden door een zwart zandstrand, dat een mooi contrast vormt met het groene water van de lagune en het diepblauw van de zee. Tijdens je vrije tijd in El Golfo heb je gelegenheid om bij een van de vele restaurants aan de kust neer te strijken. Hoewel eten niet bij dit deel van de trip is inbegrepen, zijn lokale specialiteiten zoals gegrilde vis en papas arrugadas, oftewel gerimpelde aardappelen, regelrechte aanraders. Deze Canarische aardappelen worden gekookt in sterk gezouten water tot ze een zoute korst en een gerimpelde schil krijgen. Ze worden dan geserveerd met rode of groene mojosaus.

Tot slot bezoek je La Geria, de wijnstreek van Lanzarote met een unieke productiemethode. De wijnstokken worden geteeld in kuilen die in de vulkanische grond zijn gegraven en worden beschermd door stenen muren, zocos genaamd. Hierdoor gedijen de wijnstokken goed ondanks de droge omstandigheden en de harde wind op het eiland. Met als resultaat de beroemde Malvasia-wijn. Je sluit je tour af met een wijnproeverij, waarbij je de smaken proeft waar Lanzarote bekend om staat. Ondertussen neem je het vulkanische uitzicht in je op.

But the local families needed to make the land productive again, and through sheer hard work and determination, they succeeded in creating the vineyards of La Geria. You'll start off with a scenic walk, following trails through private vineyards belonging to the family-owned bodega of Nacho Romero, opened exclusively for National Geographic travellers. As you soak up the unique character of these landscapes where vineyards are surrounded by volcanoes, the owner will explain how the layer of volcanic ash, known locally as ‘picón,' has shaped their cultivation methods, which are unique in the world. If you are lucky enough to find them ripe, you might even get to pick grapes straight from the vine as you hear Nacho or his wife Luisa, both winemakers, talk about the characteristics of volcanic wine. Back at the bodega after the walk, you'll be able to sample one of the artisanal wines that Nacho and Luisa make in their home winery. Next, you'll head to Bodega La Geria – another important component of the ecological wine making movement. The winemaker himself will show you around the bodega. Find out the secrets of the hollows, called ‘zocos' which shelter the vines from the wind, and discover the different varieties of grapes that thrive in Lanzarote's volcanic terroir. To finish, savour a tasting of one of the estate's renowned wines with local cheese and crackers.
