Firenzes Palazzo Pitti er et av de største museene i Italia i dag og et favorittstopp for byens mange besøkende. Palasset ble bygget av den rike florentinske bankmannen Luca Pitti og er en storslått renessansebygning som dateres tilbake til 1458. Den virkelige berømmelsen og makten til denne bygningen begynte da den mektige de' Medici-familien, en av de regjerende familiene i Storhertugdømmet Toscana og store beskyttere av kunst, tok det som gjestebolig og brukte det etter hvert som lagringsplass for sin voksende samling av dyrebare gjenstander, malerier og kunstverk.
I dag huser Palazzo Pitti mange ulike museer som ligger i forskjellige etasjer og saler i bygningen. Besøkende kan se Palatina-galleriet, Galleriet for Moderne Kunst, Kostymegalleriet (som er som et antikt motegalleri), 'Museo degli Argenti' som oppbevarer en del av de' Medicis familieskatt, Porselensmuseet og den berømte Boboli-hagen (Giardino di Boboli).
Bygningen er laget i rustikk stein som gir bygningen et strengt, men kraftig utseende som forsterkes ytterligere av en serie buede åpninger, som ligner gamle romerske akvedukter. Cosimo I de Medicis kone kjøpte bygningen og fikk kunstneren og arkitekten Giorgio Vasari til å forstørre strukturen for å passe familiens smak. Vasari bygde også en korridor som skulle forbinde Pitti-palasset direkte med Palazzo Vecchio, sete for regjeringen, med en gangbro gjennom Uffizi-galleriet og Ponte Vecchio.
