Ting å gjøre i Pompeiis ruiner
Oldtidsbyen Pompeii har vært på UNESCOs verdensarvliste siden 1997, og trenger nesten ikke introduseres. Som kjent ble byen jevnet med vulkans aske og pimpstein, og dens detaljerte arkeologiske utgravinger gir en intim opplevelse av det romerske hverdagslivet, men anses også for å være en advarsel mot å bo så nær en aktiv vulkan.
Vesuvs topp sprengtes i år 79 f.Kr, og før det var byen et kommersielt sentrum og hjem for mer enn 10 000 innbyggere med et tett nettverk av boliger, butikker og underholdningsfasiliteter – det inkluderer eksempelvis amfiteater, termiske bad og bordell. Per dags dato finnes det fortsatt begravede gjenstander i byen, men det meste er oppdaget og vel bevart.
Domenico Fontana oppdaget den skjulte byen ved et uhell i 1594 da han gravde en tunell. Men det var først i 1748 at en mer seriøs utgraving startet. Væskebasert gips ble brukt for å erstatte organisk materiale (som f.eks. menneskekropper), og skremmende, men dokumentariske scener oppsto. Fra Forum, senter for det politiske og sosiale liv i byen, til fresker og veggmalt graffiti – Pompeii bære vitne om en moderne kultur og er en viktig forteller vedrørende menneskets historie.
