Auschwitz-Birkenau-komplekset er et symbol på Holocaust og har etterlatt et skamfullt merke i menneskets historie. Gjennom fem år ble over én millioner jøder, polakker, romani og andre folkegrupper systematisk drept av de tyske okkupantene under andre verdenskrig. Konfronterende og emosjonelt utfordrende – et besøk til komplekset er en viktig del av den menneskelige erfaringen.
Komplekset består av to deler: Auschwitz I og Auschwitz II-Birkenau. Auschwitz I var hovedområdet og åpnet i 1940. Skiltet over porten lyder Arbeit macht frei (arbeid setter deg fri). Her lå de første leirene, SS-kontorene og labratprier hvor medisinske eksperimenter ble utført, samt de første drapene med gass med Zyklon B fant sted. Auschwitz II-Birkenau ble bygget senere og ble – og blir – ansett som en utryddelsesleir. Restene etter gasskamrene og krematoriene, sammen med de primitive brakkene, kan fortsatt sees.
Siden 1947 har kompleksene vært et minnested og museum dedikert til Auschwitz’ mange ofre. Besøkende trenger omkring 90 min i hver leir for å få hele historien bak hendelsene som foregikk her. Med over to millioner besøkende hvert år anbefaler vi at du bestiller billett på forhånd.
