Höga dubbla valv, granitpelare och invecklade geometriska dekorationer: katedralen-moskén i Cordoba (även känd som Mezquita) är en lugn men fantastisk skönhet. Inte bara ett magnifikt exempel på morisk och islamisk arkitektur, det är också en fascinerande återspegling av stadens förflutna och de många civilisationer som en gång bebodde den.
Byggd 784 av Abd al-Rahman I på platsen för en före detta visigotiska kyrka, byggdes den ut flera gånger av senare muslimska härskare fram till Reconquista 1236, då Cordoba återigen föll under kristet styre. Det omvandlades sedan till en romersk-katolsk kyrka, vilket ledde till tillägg av ett renässanskatedralskåp och dess ovanliga status som katedral-moské.
Höjdpunkterna inkluderar den trädfyllda Patio de los Naranjas, den enorma skogen av pelare, fågelperspektivet från klocktornet och naturligtvis den utsmyckade inredningen. Inne i bönesalen är mihrab (bönnisch) och maksura där eliten bad är fantastiskt dekorerade och utan tvekan de vackraste delarna av hela moskén.
