Things to do in Kenai Fjords National Park

4.7/5 (3)

Located in southern Alaska, it would be difficult to find a National Park that beats Kenai Fjords. With a unique history and culture shaped by the vast glaciers and beautiful fjords, no two days are the same in this ever-changing landscape.

Declared a National Park in 1980, the shaping of the landscape is thought to have had a helping hand by the Alaskan Natives, with evidence dating back thousands of years. Hunters, fishermen, miners, and fox farmers have all inhabited the park in more recent times.

Home to the largest ice field in the United States, at 700-square-miles, Harding Ice Field is not to be missed. In fact, nearly 51% of the Kenai Fjords are covered by ice. Bear Glacier, the largest of over 38 glaciers, is 21 miles long and stands at 1,260 feet.

Enjoy different winter activities including dog sledding and snowmobile riding or walk through the Exit Glacier Area to experience the thrill of an active glacier. Be on the lookout for different wildlife at the park, you will be sure to encounter bears, wolves, moose, beavers, and more!

Dive into the history of this beautiful area with a tour, or hop on a boat and cruise around the area. The park is open all year, but some areas may be closed due to the changing conditions. The road to Exit Glacier is closed during much of the spring as well as the winter months.

“My only complaint was that it was not handicap accessible. I had to hop around the boat making it difficult to take pictures and get upstairs. The crew however, were fantastic! Megan was knowledgeable and accommodating.”
