Things to do in Church of St. Bavo

Prepare to be hypnotised by the church of St. Bavo! Towering over the city of Haarlem, it’s home to a world-famous organ, medieval art and other gems waiting for you to explore.

St. Bavo (or Grote Kerk, meaning ‘Big Church’) is a reformed Protestant church and former Catholic cathedral situated in Grote Markt. Its striking 246-spire and impressive bell tower make it the highest building in the city - you can’t miss it! You’ll be able to listen to the characteristic bells ring if you’re in the area in the evening.

While you marvel at its Gothic exterior, the inside will not disappoint and is well worth a visit. There are many tours to choose from to take you around. See wonderful wooden ceilings, stained-glass windows, medieval artwork, and tombstones of major figures from Dutch history.

The star attraction has to be the MĂŒller organ! Yes, built by Christiaan MĂŒller himself, the organ has 5,000 pipes and is decorated with 25 lifesize sculptures (impressive!). Legendary composers have played it, including 10-year old Mozart!

See the organ in action yourselves at one of the weekly concerts that are organised at certain times of the year. Grote Kerk is waiting for you.
