What to expect

You'll be let into the secret world of the Maya on this evening tour with a difference. Visit a typical Maya house in the heart of the forest near Playa del Carmen and open your eyes to their food and rituals, then swim in a cenote during the hours of darkness.

Journey to a Maya community in the jungle and enjoy a spiritual experience that you'll find nowhere else. We'll firstly visit a typical Maya hut to learn about their ancient customs and meet the local people after which you'll be shown how to make tortillas and achiote chicken from scratch. Then a healer – or shaman – will take you step by step through the ancestral purification rituals including seashells and fire in a temazcal, a stone-built sauna.

Before dinner, we'll walk through the forest to an ancient cenote where you'll be able to swim in the crystal clear water. Finally, you'll feast on local dishes with Maya people before returning to your hotel.

This National Geographic Day Tour is a journey into the deepest aspects of Mayan culture, bridging the gap between the tempting beauty of the cenotes the region is so famous for, and the significance they hold in local tradition. You'll begin the day with a descent into either Abuelo or Zoi Che cenote, where you can choose to enjoy a cooling dip. These water-filled caverns offer a tangible connection to the Mayan way of life.
