On Saturday morning, Shabbat is a beautiful, relaxing day that is perfect to take a bike ride around Tel Aviv’s historic synagogues and chill cafés as the city itself is quieter than usual. A short bike ride will reveal a hidden layer of the city, which is fundamentally different from the familiar image of Tel Aviv as one of the most vibrant cities in the world. Despite being the city synonymous with secularism, the Jewish community that founded Tel Aviv was an ultra-Orthodox (or at least a traditional religious) community. By the end of the 1970s, many of the city's residents were ultra-Orthodox and national religious who attended hundreds of yeshivas and dozens of thriving Hasidic communities.
