Founded in 1867, the Kunstgewerbemuseum (or the Museum of Decorative Arts) was originally a private institute called the Deutsches Gewerbe-Museum zu Berlin (German Design Museum (or German Design Museum), but soon grew to be the world-famous museum that it is today. The Kunstgewerbemuseum is home to many iconic pieces of European art, including ornate furniture, lavishly embroidered textiles and fine porcelain vases, which are spread across two locations. The Kulturforum near Potsdamer Platz was originally designed by Rolf Gutbrod and modernised by Kuehn Malvezzi and boasts a considerable Fashion Gallery alongside many European masterpieces. The second location can be found at Schloss Köpenick on an island at the river Dahm and offers its visitors a selection of interior design gems from the 16th and 18th centuries. If you want to discover some of the most prestigious craftwork, fashion and design from the Middle Ages to today, then a visit to the Kunstgewerbemuseum is a must!
