Things to do in Tivoli Gardens

4.6/5 (49)

The Tivoli Gardens recreation garden and amusement park first opened in August of 1843. Located in the downtown area of Copenhagen, it is the second oldest amusement park in the world that is still in operation. With an estimated 4.6 million visitors a year, Tivoli Gardens is the fifth-most visited theme park in Europe.

Back in the mid-19th century, Georg Carstensen convinced King Christian VIII to allow him to build a park because he stated that "when people are amusing themselves, they are not thinking about politics". Carstensen was granted 15 acres of land by the monarch and with the addition of a variety of attractions, Tivoli was born. During World War II when Denmark was under Nazi rule, a large part of the park was burned down due to sabotage and was forced to close for two weeks.

Today, Tivoli Gardens has 25 rides, four roller coasters, and attractions suitable for guests of all ages. Enjoy Rutschebanen, one of the world's oldest wooden roller coasters, which is one of seven roller coasters today that is still operated by a brake man on each train. From bumper cars, to the ferris wheel, boat rides on the lake and the carousel, there are plenty of fun activities that will make you want to stay for the whole day!

There is also a concert hall, aquarium and performing arts theater on the park grounds. In fact, you can spend a whole day without going on a single ride by strolling in the gardens, catching a live band in one of the music halls, or by watching a live performance. If you happen to get hungry, stop at one of the 45 restaurants and cafés throughout the park and enjoy your food while admiring the beautiful sights.

Visit during Halloween and watch as the gardens and theme park transform into a spooky Halloween town with giant pumpkins, ghosts, scarecrows, spiders and if you want, test your fears at the Haunted House. Spend a visit during Christmas and you will get to experience a magical Christmas adventure with snow covered houses, the Gingerbread Castle or say hello to Santa Clause in his Christmas room.

The park can be reached easily by public transportation as it is located next to Central rail station in the city center, while there are numerous parking facilities within walking distance for those who decide to arrive by car. The park's opening hours are from 11 AM- 10 PM from Sunday-Thursday, and 11 AM- 11 PM on Friday and Saturday, while the park is closed on certain days throughout the year in between seasons.
