What to expect

Combining inland Crete's rugged landscapes, ancient villages and a visit to a typical shepherd's hut, this small-group 4x4 tour leads you into the landscape surrounding Mount Psiloritis. You'll kick things off at Klados Winery, where the owner shares a few Cretan wine-making secrets before pouring two of the island's finest varieties for you to sample. Georgios, one of our expert local guides, says, “when you taste the wine and cheese where they're made, you understand them in a whole new way.”

After this, you'll roll on to an olive oil mill in Melidoni for a tasting of the island's famous liquid gold and a look at how it's crafted, from tree to bottle. You'll then wind your way up the slopes of Mount Psiloritis to the ruins of Halepa Monastery, once a refuge for Cretan rebels but now a peaceful spot restored to its former beauty.

As your off-road adventure continues, your guide will share the island's history and traditions, introduce you to the locals and point out the wildlife that calls this region home. You‘ll then pause for views over Axos Gorge, and if lucks on your side, you might spot eagles and wild goats nearby, too. Then, it's time to see an original shepherd's hut – known as ‘mitato' – where you'll watch a live cheese-making demo and enjoy fresh tastings. The day wraps up in the village of Axos where you'll sit down and tuck into a spread of authentic Cretan dishes at a family-run taverna.

When we bought the Cretan 4x4 Experience from TUI representative we were promised that the children would get to pat the goats but they didn´t. We hoped to see more animals. But the guide was very passionate and efficient and made this experience very enjoyable.

Der Fahrer Panos war wirklich super. Er hat während der ganzen Fahrt ununterbrochen informative Dinge über Kreta erzählt und viele spaßige Sachen gesagt. Ein bisschen enttäuschend war das in der Ausschreibung angepriesen wurde das es ein Mittagessen mit Wein gibt, der Wein fehlte wie beim letzten Ausflug auch. Einem mythologischen Park + Töpferwerkstatt haben wir auch nicht gesehen. Alles in allem war es ok, aber nicht wie in der Beschreibung. Die 3 Fahrer haben es trotzallem zu einem tollen Tag

Bis zum ersten Stop war ich leider im englischsprachigen Jeep verplant. Das war ein bisschen blöd. Durfte dann aber umsteigen, ab da war es super. Der Guide konnte alle Fragen beantworten, hat viel über Land und Leute erzählt. Besuch im Honigmuseum war sehr interessant, dann zum Kloster und danach zur Ziegenkäserei. Das Essen war super.

Off-road adventures don't get more fun than this. On this evening tour, you'll buckle up for a thrilling ride through the Cretan mountains, taking in villages, landmarks and more. What's more, there'll be a traditional dinner at a local taverna waiting for you. Vaggelis, one of our local expert guides, says 'Lassithi Plateau was said to be the birthplace of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods. According to legend, his mother, Rhea, hid the newborn in a cave on the plateau to protect him from being devoured by his father. It's one of the best places in Crete to grab a bird's-eye view of the north'.It all starts the moment you hop aboard your 4x4 and head for the mountains. You'll stop by Aposelemis basin reservoir and ancient Roman aqueducts, before following the path to the village of Kastamonitsa. Here, you'll be greeted with a tipple of fiery raki. Vaggelis says, 'After the grape harvest, the leftover skins, seeds, and stems are fermented and then distilled to produce raki, a tradition that many Cretan families proudly maintain'.You'll continue along the Minoan path, taking in the wildlife and scenery while learning all about local mythology and history. You'll stop for a glass of sweet, sparkling wine and admire Lassithi Plateau, as well as its iconic views. Crete is the cradle of wine history, with its authentic country life and indigenous grape varieties dating far back to the ancient Minoans. Veta, one of our local guides, says ‘What I like most about showing visitors around on this tour is that they meet the local producers and farmers and hear their stories.' Over the course of the day, you'll taste locally produced olive oil, enjoy a typical Cretan lunch, and sip on regional whites and reds at an award-winning winery.We'll begin our culinary adventure at the Kriti Allios olive oil producer, set among olive groves to the south of Heraklion. Here we'll tour the facilities and surrounding groves before a Cretan olive oil tasting session. ‘Olive oil has been a Cretan staple since Minoan times. Archeologists have found evidence that the Minoans, the earliest Cretan civilization, used olive oil for rituals, medicine and culinary purposes,' adds Veta. After the tasting, there's a tasty farm fresh lunch to tuck into with traditional local delicacies.Next, we'll pay a visit to family-run Titakis Winery. Its wines have won multiple awards in the past decade, especially the Kotsifali reds. After a tour of the estate and the wine production areas, you'll taste four different wines, accompanied by breadsticks and olives. Veta says, ‘There's always a bottle on the dinner table in Cretan homes – and often it'll be from this winery. The Titakis family has a strong focus on the production of rare local varieties.'

Andreas, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The Minoans were very advanced, and the Palace of Knossos showcases architectural techniques such as multi-storey buildings and a sophisticated drainage system that were ahead of their time.'You'll start the morning in Rethymnon's maze of colourful streets, where you can browse the shops, find a little cafe or head down to the harbour. Curving around the small bay, Rethymnon harbour is as pretty as it is old. The views of the Venetian-era Fortezza and out to sea are a delight. Next up is Crete's capital, Heraklion. Here, you'll enjoy a guided tour of the city's best bits, such as the Venetian lion fountain and the loggia. There'll be some free time to explore at your own pace, too.Last but by no means least, the last stop of the day is a guided visit of the Palace of Knossos. There's a chance to have a go at making ceramics and a visit to the Mythological Park, too. Katerina, one of our expert local guides, enthusiastically says, ‘Lassithi plateau is a personal favourite on this tour. You'll be greeted by the sight of dozens of windmills that dot the landscape. They were built in the 19th century to grind grain, and are now a symbol of the region.'Kick off on a trail which climbs into the mountains to reach the first stop at the Aposelimi dam. From here we'll make our way to a viewpoint where we can see across the Lassithi plateau, a high, fertile plain that legend states was the birthplace of Zeus.Rumbling down to the plateau, we'll head to a ceramics workshop and olive oil producer. It's a fun stop for the kids who will have plenty of time to have a go at making their own pottery creations. Next up is the Mythological park, where you'll find out all about ancient Greek myths - the special lighting and sound effects alongside the audio tour make the park enjoyable for all ages. Round off the day with a late lunch in a taverna, before calling in at the village of Krassi, which is famous for a 2,000-year old plane tree and has a natural spring water source.
