Things to do in Enkhuizen
Enkhuizen is a municipality and a city in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland and the region of West-Frisia. Centuries ago, Enkhuizen was one of the wealthiest cities of Holland. Being an important harbour and the center of overseas trade with the East Indies, Enkhuizen reached the peak of its power in the mid-17th century, but later lost its position to Amsterdam. If you walk through Enkhuizen's old city with its beautiful state mansions, bridges and canals, city walls and harbors, the city's rich history will come alive! The city is very famous for the Zuiderzee Museum, which shows the stories of people who once lived on the shores of the former Zuiderzee (‘Southern Sea’). Not only is the museum dedicated to the history of this area, but it also holds interesting temporary exhibitions, with the objects of Dutch design, art and fashion on display. During the summer, the museum holds performances, when people in traditional costumes demonstrate the way life used to be.
