Things to do in St Bridget's Church Gdansk

The history of this church begins in the 14th century. The remains of Bridget of Sweden remained in a chapel for several days and for this reason the adoration of St Bridget began. A few years later the first Bridgettine Convent in Gdansk was opened. Unfortunately the church was heavily damaged during the Second World War and was rebuilt in 1973.

The most popular feature of the church is its ‘Amber Altar.' Admire the spectacular 174cm-high amber monstrance depicting the tree of life and the monumental high altar.

This church also became famous because of the shipyard strikes that were supported by the parish priest Henryk Jankowski who made this location the union's sanctuary. During the following years, many heads of state came to visit St. Brigid's church, including Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Margaret Thatcher, British Princess Anne, Edward Kennedy and others.

It is now possible to visit the crypt containing the relics of St Bridget of Sweden and a couple of skulls discovered here in 2010.
