Things to do in Hoorn
Hoorn is a small town located in the province of North Holland, close to Amsterdam. During the Dutch Golden Age in the 16th and 17th centuries, Hoorn became an important center of trade and a major port city. Being also one of the home seats of many Dutch chartered companies, such as the Dutch East India Company (VOC). While in the 18th century the fortune of Hoorn declined due to its proximity to Amsterdam, it is now at the center of a flourishing horticultural region.
Explore the area north of the harbor to admire houses dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. See the town's landmark towers the Hoofdtoren, a former harbor control tower and the Maria-/Kruittoren, built in late gothic style as part of the city wall. Walk through the city's only remaining gate, the Oosterpoort and visit the former weigh house.
The city also boasts the Statenlogement, its former city hall and the Statencollege, which houses the Westfries Museum.
