Things to do in Basilica of Saint Servatius
The city of Maastricht is home to the oldest basilica in the Netherlands: the Basilica of Saint Servatius. Built on the spot where Maastricht’s first bishop — Saint Servatius — was buried, this historic Roman Catholic church is a popular pilgrimage site in the region.
The Basilica of Saint Servatius has an impressive treasure chamber containing several important religious relics, the most famous being the Noodkist, a 12th-century oak box shrine holding Saint Servatius’ remains.
The Basilica of Saint Servatius as we see it today primarily displays a Romanesque architectural style, with touches of Baroque and Gothic influences as well. You can find the basilica on Maastricht’s Vrijthof Square, and it is open daily to the public.
