Things to do in Mt Vesuvius
World-known for its eruption in 79 AD that buried some Ancient Roman cities such as Pompeii and Herculaneum, Mt Vesuvius is about 6 miles from the city of Naples and can be visited on a day or half-day trip from either Pompeii, Herculaneum or Naples.
Regarding the origin of the word Vesuvius, there are numerous hypotheses: there are those who attribute it to an Indo-European root, which means "to illuminate" or "to burn". There are those who see the origins in mythology and hypothesize a tribute to Hercules, and those who attribute the origin of the word to the phrase Vae suis! which in Latin means "Woe to his own!", an exclamation to indicate the well-known consequences of volcanic eruptions.
Vesuvius dominates and overlooks the Gulf of Naples, inevitably becoming one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. In fact, Mount Vesuvius is one of the world's most dangerous volcanoes and perhaps this is what makes it also one of the most fascinating. The area of the volcano has been protected as National Park since 1995.
Reach the top and take in the spectacular view across the Gulf of Naples. Then, turn your eyes to admire something even more incredible, the spectacular crater of over 200 meters deep. On the way back, don't forget to enjoy a delicious pizza or participate in a tasting of fine wines that the area has to offer.

Reviews Mt Vesuvius
“Group of 36 far to big We spent hour & half before we left sorrento due to the number of pick ups it took us hour &40 minutes to reach our destination meaning we had been on the coach for over 3 hours! Longer than travel to Italy! Lunch was inedible, eldente is ok but uncooked pasta is vile, everybody on our table that had the dish couldn't eat the meal, restaurant absolutely packed we were herded into a small room, boiling hot without ventilation staff so busy imp to complain Guide fabulous”
“Pompeii great visit. Lunch was cheap basic very small proschetta, small tomato pasta , 1 glass of water 1 glass of local red wine( not great) . Not value for money Versuvius very good although it would have been helpful to know what the walking terrain was like. It was steep, loose gravelly and quite dangerous”
“The groups should be smaller, less pick ups and drop offs.”
“100 euros is a lot. The trips in sorrento are all highly priced. The coach trip and driver were great. Pickup fantastic. Only 90 minutes to climb Vesuvius walk the ridge section and take in the view and buy a drink and return to the coach is very tight. Some people were late. The meal had a great starter plate but the rest palatable but quite simple not even any Parmesan was offered on the pasta. Wines were nice but all rushed so they could get you in their shop to buy! Who's making profit here”
