Things to do in Akamas Peninsula National Park

4.5/5 (340)

Akamas Peninsula National Park is not for your average Cyprus visitor. Those who go to Akamas Peninsula National Park in northwest Cyprus tend to seek more than just the ordinary beach holiday — they want to explore a mountainous nature reserve characterised by wildlife diversity, secluded beaches, clear waters, and free from human development.

A hotspot for biodiversity in Cyprus due to its relatively inaccessible location, Akamas Peninsula National Park is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. If you’re lucky, you might be able to spot the Paphos Blue (Glaucopsyche paphos), a small butterfly that is endemic to Cyprus. Other points of interest in the area include the Baths of Aphrodite, where according to myth the goddess Aphrodite used to bathe, the Blue Lagoon cove, and Lara Beach, a secluded beach that is known for its resident sea turtles.

Akamas Peninsula is a promontory facing the Mediterranean Sea found approximately 40 km north of Paphos, Cyprus. To get around, it’s best to get a sturdy 4x4 vehicle or quad bike for off-road driving as opposed to using a car since there are not many roads here. You can also get around by foot on one of the many hiking trails or cruise along the shores of the Akamas Peninsula by boat.

“Coach turned up 35 mins late so we called the number on the confirmation email to see if there was a problem. When it did turn up, no apology from guide and she blatantly bated us out over the microphone on the bus saying don't go ringing up to see where they are as there was traffic and the times given by TUI are wrong. So after how long of the coach being late is it ok to call and find out if there was an issue ??????”

“The majority of this trip came as a massive surprise to us. If you love 30 second stops and long walks in 30•c heat this is a lovely trip however for most of the stops the time in each location is practically none existent, the jeeps are CRAMMED full with people 6 adults in the back and with no air con! The buffet was cold and plain and the boat trip only took cash for drinks (which we were unaware of). Overall this trip was TERRIBLE value for money. The guide did however work hard to entertain.”

“The akamas gorge tour was very good, but we only had 30mins to swim (including changing and drying and getting a drink). The disappointing part was the "learning about turtle conservation" part. We just parked up on the top of a cliff and looked at some A4 printed sheets, taped up around a hut. There was a bit of talk, but nothing that wasn't written. I felt that for the overall cost it just wasn't value for money. I paid less for a full day tour (not with Tui) and got more out of it.”

“When booking was inform of pick up time but did not say clearly where from and did not clearly advise that would spend an hour and a half travelling to latchi. Got on the coach outside the hotel ant 11.40 and boat did not sail until 2pm. This was not advised on the booking. Was a long day on a coach, there and back. The boat and blue lagoon was a good experience. The unexpected coach trip and travel time to get there was not.”
