Things to do in Vik
Known to be the Southernmost village in Iceland, Vik has a population of about 300 inhabitants and is the largest settlement within a 50km radius. Its origins date back to the 9th century but traders only started settling there towards the end of the 19th century, selling products such as salt, sugar, flour, fruits and vegetables. Vik's population expanded slowly with time, it became a meeting point for farmers and its church Víkurkirkja was eventually constructed in 1934, solidifying its status as a community. Iceland's main Ring Road passes right through the village, making Vik an easily accessible destination for locals and tourists alike. Located a mere 2.5-hour drive from the capital Reykjavik, this is the ideal base for those looking to explore the country's raw nature. Iceland's most famous black sand beach Reynisfjara is a short walking distance from the village centre, it's 4th largest glacier Mýrdalsjökull is located in the vicinity and the Katla ice cave, located under the Katla volcano, is waiting to wow visitors following a drive through volcanic sand plains. While you're here, don't forget to try spotting local wildlife such as the Icelandic Puffin birds.
