Die Sühnekapelle wurde an der Stelle errichtet, an der König Ludwig XVI. und Königin Marie Antoinette 1793 begraben wurden, nachdem sie auf dem Place de la Révolution, heute Place de la Concorde, guillotiniert worden waren. Sie wurde 1815 von König Ludwig XVIII., dem Bruder Ludwigs XVI., in Auftrag gegeben und 1826 fertiggestellt.
