La Cappella Expatiory fu costruita sul luogo in cui furono sepolti il re Luigi XVI e la regina Maria Antonietta nel 1793, dopo essere stati ghigliottinati in Place de la Révolution, ora conosciuta come Place de la Concorde. Fu commissionato dal re Luigi XVIII, fratello di Luigi XVI, nel 1815 e completato nel 1826.
