Tijdens deze National Geographic Day Tour ontrafel je samen met een archeoloog de geheimen van de Guanchen, de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Gran Canaria. Je trapt af bij het La Fortaleza Museum, waar je meer te weten komt over wat deze voorouders aten. Ook heb je als National Geographic reiziger exclusief toegang tot de archiefruimte. Binnen onthullen een paar zeldzame mummies verhalen over het leven en de dood van de oorspronkelijke bewoners van het eiland. Je neemt een kijkje bij woongrotten versierd met muurschilderingen, graanschuren, stenen huizen, grafmonumenten, gravures en het oudste heiligdom van het eiland. Ook ontdek je waarom de Guanchen dit de 'As van de Wereld' noemden, de plek waar hemel en aarde samenkwamen.
Wanneer je door de tunnel in de rots loopt, vang je een glimp op van de oude manier van leven in Fortaleza. Ook heb je er een schitterend uitzicht op La Fortaleza de Abajo. Deze uitgestrekte nederzetting van uitgegraven huizen ligt op een steenworp afstand.
Je rondt de tour af met een schilderachtige rit over kronkelende wegen naar de voet van de caldera. En in Mirador Santa Lucia schuif je aan voor een typisch Canarische lunch met regionale gerechten en een indrukwekkend uitzicht. Terwijl je geniet van de rijke smaken, neem je het omringende landschap in je op. En je mijmert nog wat na over de fascinerende geschiedenis die je tijdens deze tocht hebt ontdekt.
