O que fazer em Magdeburg

Magdeburg, the capital of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, is a city that’s rooted in the past – it’s over 1,200 years old – yet has a bright and modern feel to it. As you wander the city’s streets, you’ll find the classic cobbled lanes and Medieval churches you might expect of the old town, but if you follow the River Elbe south, you’ll discover Magdeburg’s art quarter, Buckau. There’s an urban, industrial vibe here, with art studios and galleries tucked into every corner and independent cafes spilling out onto the pavement. Whether it’s the grand cathedral and green spaces you love, or the quirkier creative side that piques your interest, there’s always plenty going on in this dynamic city. Top three things to do in Magdeburg1. Visit Magdeburg’s historic Cathedral The Cathedral of Saints Maurice and Catherine dominates the skyline of the old town and is well worth a good look around. It’s the oldest Gothic cathedral in Germany, having been rebuilt in 1209 after a fire destroyed the original. Inside, you’ll find intricately carved sculptures, a vaulted ceiling and huge stained-glass windows that flood the nave with light. For Medieval history buffs, it’s also home to the tomb of Emperor Otto I, one of the most influential leaders of Europe in his day. 2. Gawp at the Green CitadelPart fairytale, part dream, this puzzling pink stripy building has got to be one of the most unusual you’ll ever see. Austrian architect, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, designed the complex to be a living space, so there’s a mix of shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as a theatre, hotel and even apartments, all mingling with green rooftops of trees and plants. Get your camera ready to snap pics of this whimsical wonder that comes complete with turrets that Snow White would be proud of.3. Plug into the live music sceneMagdeburg is a city that loves its music, and it has a lively year-round festival and gig scene to prove it. From electro and indie to metal and classical, there’s a band and beat for everyone here. Check out what’s happening at the open-air stage in Elbauenpark for a festival, Theater Grüne Zitadelle for intimate acoustic sets or Festung Mark, a fortress-turned-event space that hosts rock, folk, and Medieval-themed concerts.
