A baslica é mundialmente conhecida especialmente por ser o lar da Última Ceia, a pintura icônica de Leonardo da Vinci. No início, a basílica foi construída por ordem de Francesco I Sforza, e foi concluída em 1497 e a pedido de Ludovico il Moro, destinada a se tornar o mausoléu da família Sforza. Hoje em dia Santa Maria delle Grazie é um Patrimônio Mundial da UNESCO e um dos melhores exemplos da arquitetura renascentista e gótica de Milão.
