There are also smaller, original boutiques selling haute couture clothing. Martí adds, "If all that shopping tires you out, pop over to the art nouveau Colon Market. Transfer to the Moors and Christians Festival of La Vila Joiosa

Declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest, the Moors and Christians Festival of La Vila Joiosa is one of Costa Blanca's most spectacular celebrations. Every summer, this sleepy seaside town bursts into life for a week of parades, parties and historical battle re-enactments that'll whisk you straight back to the 16th century. Locals dress up as Moors or Christians, and the whole town gets involved – there's dancing, drumming and enough paella to feed a packed Wembley Stadium. With this transfer ticket, all you need to do is turn up ready to celebrate in style. Whether you're into history, costumes, or just love a good fiesta, this lively summer event has loads to offer. It's all about celebrating the town's past, when locals fought off a pirate invasion in 1538. Legend has it that Saint Martha, the town's patron saint, stepped in to save the day by flooding the beach and sinking the pirate ships. As a thank you, the townspeople began holding annual celebrations in her honour.

Held annually from June 20th to 24th, this celebration transforms the city into a lively hub of art, tradition and fun. You'll kick things off with a guided stroll through the city so you can take a look at the "Hogueras" – large artistic structures made of cardboard and stone. These creations, depicting satirical and sometimes funny scenes, are scattered throughout Alicante. After the tour, you'll have some free time to immerse yourself in the festival's unique atmosphere. The Bonfires of San Juan are a traditional and joyful celebration that marks the beginning of summer. The festival's all about burning useless objects at the summer solstice. During these days, the city is filled with light, colour, music and fireworks. The event kicks off with the Proclamation and the "Planta," when bonfires and lots of different monuments are placed around the city – some of them get up to be 20 metres tall. The most anticipated moment of the festival is St John's Day, June 24th, when a purifying fire consumes the bonfires during an event known as the "Nit de la Crema."
