The journey begins north of Salalah, moving from lush coast to arid desert. First, visit Wadi Dowka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and frankincense tree reserve, to learn about Boswellia sacra and the ancient incense trade. Pass through Thumrait, gateway to the Rub’ al Khali, observing Bedouin life, grazing camels, and traditional desert adaptations. Continue to Ubar, the legendary “Atlantis of the Sands,” for an outside visit of its excavated ruins, rediscovered via satellite imaging and ancient maps.
Next, stop at a camel farm to see how camels are raised, sample fresh camel milk, then enter the Rub’ al Khali, the world’s largest sand desert. Enjoy a 4x4 dune drive, photo stops at golden dunes and fossil rocks, and a high dune sunset with breathtaking views. Your guide will serve Omani coffee and dates or snacks on the dunes. After sunset, return to Salalah under the evening sky, possibly spotting stars, arriving at your hotel around 8:00–9:00 PM depending on season.
