Qué te espera

Si le apetece disfrutar de la naturaleza y alejarse del bullicio de las ciudades históricas de Croacia, lo que busca es el delta del Neretva. A hora y media de Split, es un mosaico de vías fluviales, marismas y lagunas por las que podrá serpentear tranquilamente mientras cambia sus vacaciones a un ritmo más pausado durante el día.

Llegará por la mañana a Villa Neretva, donde subirá a bordo de una trupica -una embarcación fluvial tradicional croata- y surcará las aguas del río Neretva. Los humedales del río se extienden por Bosnia y Herzegovina, con un tramo relativamente pequeño que fluye a través de Croacia antes de desembocar en el mar Adriático. En esta zona protegida, podrá deslizarse por sus aguas cristalinas y avistar garzas, garcetas y cormoranes pigmeos. Hay más de 300 especies de aves entre el resto de la fauna, así que no pierda de vista algunos hallazgos más inusuales, como coloridos martines pescadores, salamandras de fuego negras y amarillas y vibrantes lagartos verdes de los Balcanes.

Pasado el lago Kuti, pararemos a almorzar en la taberna Neretva House, a la que sólo se puede llegar en barco, para degustar un festín de platos tradicionales dálmatas. Después, relájese mientras serpentea por los verdes humedales, de regreso a tierra.

Tomislav, a local guide, says, “It's a paradise not only for people, but for the 860 species of plants and 240 species of birds and fish that call Krka National Park home.”Krka National Park is a protected place of thundering waterfalls, lakes and riverside walks. After a brief introduction, you'll have the day to stroll along the wooden waterside walkways and admire the scenery. But the park's crowning glory is Skradinski Buk – a huge natural pool with 17 cascading waterfalls bursting through the trees. Tomislav adds, “The fairytale tiers of Skradinski Buk were formed by layers of travertine limestone building up from the mineral springs that feed it.”You'll stop here for a snack at a local restaurant with a view that you'll want to lock away and remember for ever. You've then got all afternoon to explore the park for yourself. You can go wildlife spotting along the trails, as nightingales, herons, falcons and owls are all regulars here. Plus, the water is so see-through-clear here that it's easy to spot fish in the waters of the Krka River. If you're craving a slice of nature and want a change from the throng of Croatia's historic cities, then the Neretva Delta is what you're after. Within an hour and a half of Split, it's a mosaic of waterways, marshes and lagoons that you can peacefully meander along as you switch your holiday to a slower pace for the day.You'll arrive in the morning at Villa Neretva, where you'll board a trupica – a traditional Croatian riverboat – and take to the waterways of the Neretva River. The river's wetlands sprawl across Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a relatively small stretch flowing through Croatia before it pours out into the Adriatic Sea. In this protected conservation area, you'll glide through the clear water, with a good chance of spotting herons, egrets and pygmy cormorants. There are over 300 species of birds here among the other wildlife, so keep an eye out for some more unusual finds, like colourful kingfishers, black and yellow fire salamanders and vibrant Balkan green lizards.Past Lake Kuti, you'll stop for lunch at Neretva House Tavern, which can only be reached by boat, for a feast of traditional Dalmatian dishes. Then, relax as you weave through the green wetlands, on your return to land.

You'll make your way along the Dalmatian coast towards Omis and then climb up the western slopes of the Dinaric Alps to the starting point. The descent ends a few hours later in the lower Cetina gorge.We'll head to Omis – a pretty town at the mouth of a rocky gorge on the River Cetina. From here, we'll drive up into the mountains. On arrival at the launching pad for the descent by raft, you'll be given a quick safety briefing and kitted out with wetsuits, helmets and life vests.Next, you'll take a seat in your raft, ready for a ride through the rugged canyon. Expect fast-moving rapids and calm currents as the raft skims, spins and glides over the foamy water. Your rafting adventure lasts about three hours, before ending at the lower gorge. Here, you can leave your rafts behind and jump into the river for a dip or explore the neighbouring forest.
