Sci-fi landschappen en kamelen - deze ochtend in Timanfaya Nationaal Park is geen gewone tour. Op dit avontuur vol plezier verken je de topattractie van Lanzarote met zowel traditionele als moderne middelen. Highlights zijn de historische 'Raven's Volcano', een bezoekerscentrum, het El Femés uitkijkpunt en, natuurlijk, een ritje op een kameel. Marian, een van onze lokale gidsen, zegt: "Je gaat een vulkaankrater in - echt een ervaring waar je de kriebels van krijgt - terwijl je op een kameel de tijd hebt om het maanlandschap in je op te nemen".

Eerst bezoek je de Volcan del Cuervo, oftewel 'Raven's vulkaan'. Het ligt aan de rand van Timanfaya Nationaal Park, en torent uit boven een landschap van gitzwart roet. Het was hier dat in 1730 de vulkaanuitbarstingen begonnen die Timanfaya hebben doen ontstaan. Torenhoge muren omringen de krater, op een opening na die is opengebarsten door een rivier van lava, waardoor je in de basis kunt komen. Vervolgens ga je naar het Bezoekers- en Interpretatiecentrum van Mancha Blanca. Je bekijkt op je gemak de multimediadisplays en krijgt uitleg over de geologie van de Canarische Eilanden.

Dan is het tijd voor het meer luchtige gedeelte van de tour - de kameelrit. Je wordt op houten stoelen geholpen die aan de eenbultige kameel - dromedaris - zijn vastgemaakt, terwijl een begeleider je rondleidt. Vanaf grote hoogte bekijk je dan het wilde en wonderlijke vulkanische landschap. Maar als je liever niet meedoet met de kameelrit, kun je een versie van de tour boeken zonder dit onderdeel. Er is ook een klein museum gewijd aan de Canarische kameel, liefkozend bekend als 'tochas'. Ook neem je het epische uitzicht vanaf het uitkijkpunt El Femés in je op. Dit ligt op 450 meter hoogte en kijkt uit over Los Ajaches, Playa Blanca, Fuerteventura en het eiland Lobos - een onvergetelijk panorama over de kust.

When booking this experience you should tell them there is a hour walk as well as, me and my partner wore sandals and my young child was on his shoulder all the way. The camel ride was a amazing experience but it was a four hour experience and it was only half hour on the camel. You need to explain more of the experience. Overall it was great just a long day and not ideal for sandals.

When picked up in our mini bus, we were sat on the very back seat, when the driver was giving out details and a run down of the history of the volcanoes and other bits of information of the island, we could not hear any of it.

Absolutely amazing experience for the whole family. I was worried about taking my 5 year old along but she loved everything about it. The walk to the volcano is really quite relaxing and not difficult at all. All my children loved it would definitely recommend.

Northern Lanzarote tour with Jameos del Agua and Teguise
